Did You Do Your Homework?

I'm currently producing and performing my NAACP and Teatrul Bacovia International Gala Star award winning solo show, DID YOU DO YOUR HOMEWORK? at the Lounge Theatre in Hollywood. This is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do in my life! However, I'm really trying to look at this as a business and trying to learn as much as I can about marketing and public relations. You can have the best show in town, but if no one knows about it, it doesn't really matter.

Many people are coming out to the show and then taking the time to write the most amazing things on the internet about my performance, the writing, and the show's overall message. I've also gotten some of the most amazing reviews by the likes of the LA Weekly, LA Times, BackStage and the Hollywood Theatre Examiner. The Hollywood Theatre Examiner's review brought tears to my eyes. The reviewer really understood the core of my characters and the significance of my show.

What's most unfortunate is that the television and radio news media hasn't come out. Not only is this piece about the urban community's responsibility for educating our youth, but it's written by a teacher that's trying to do something positive in the community. With all the crap that's going on in the Los Angeles Unified School District, from 11,000 employees being laid off to the numerous child molestation accusations, one would think the tv/radio news media would want to show a different perspective. Well, thus far I've only channel 4 news has interviewed me and that was way back in 2009!

At any rate, I'm going to keep pushing myself to do what I do. After every show people come up to me and tell me how much I inspire them. Each person is like an angel to me because there are many times that I feel that this process is overwhelming. There are many times that I want to quit because I am producing this show on a substitute teacher's pay, but the kind words of strangers feeds my soul and tells my spirit I'm doing exactly what I'm supposed to be doing.

I've made a lot of mistakes in producing my show thus far, but I don't regret a thing. I feel that I have a product that's worthwhile and meaningful. And it's up to me to let the rest of the world know it. Even if I have to make a few more mistakes along the way.
